Vol. 364 No. 2

Written Answers. - Student-Teacher Ratio.

91.

asked the Minister for Education the present student-teacher ratio in national schools; the ratio for the previous five years; the present average European ratio; and the extra amount it would cost the taxpayer to bring our national schools student-teacher ratio in line with the European ratio.

Data for the calculation of the pupilteacher ratio for the current school year have not yet been finalised. The ratios for the last five years were as follows:—

1980-81

28.3 : 1

1981-82

28.0 : 1

1982-83

27.5 : 1

1983-84

27.2 : 1

1984-85

27.1 : 1

Due to differing structures in which teachers are employed in other European countries it is not possible to identify an average European ratio for comparison purposes.
