Vol. 364 No. 3

Written Answers. - Newcastle (Tipperary) Garda Strength.

61.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the urgent need for provision of additional gardaí at Newcastle, Clonmel, as requested by the local branch of Muintir na Tíre; if he will accede to the wishes of the local people in receiving a deputation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The precise arrangements for the policing of individual areas are a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that arrangements are being made to fill a vacancy for a garda at Ballymacarbry station and that they consider that the increased strength of the station party — one sergeant and two gardaí — will be adequate to meet the police needs of Newcastle and other areas in the Ballymacarbry Garda sub-district.

If, despite the change to which I have referred, the local branch of Muintir na Tíre want to express further views in the matter, I would suggest that, in accordance with normal practice, this could most usefully be done with local officers of the Garda Síochána.
