Vol. 364 No. 5

Written Answers. - Release of Prisoner.

99.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has considered a release date for a prisoner (details supplied) who is now serving his 13th year in Portlaoise prison, particularly in view of the fact that one of those convicted by the same court of the same offence and for the same term was released in 1981; and the reasons for the disparity in the length of time served by the aforementioned persons.

The cases of all prisoners are considered on an individual basis and in those circumstances situations such as those mentioned by the Deputy can arise. In the case to which the question relates no release date has been set for the prisoner, who is serving a sentence of penal servitude for life. In accordance with normal procedure the offender's sentence will be kept under review.
