Vol. 364 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kerry National Schools

185.

asked the Minister for Education in relation to Kilgobnet national school, Killorglin, County Kerry, which is rat infested, when he expects work to start on the building of a new school having regard to the fact that the tenders were submitted on 31 August 1985; and when the local contribution, if any, will be sought.

My Department has received tenders for the proposed new national school at Kilgobnet, County Kerry. The question of the placing of a contract is being considered and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as early as possible. The local contribution will be requested at that point. I am not in a position, at this stage, to state when building works may commence.

186.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the over-crowding and dangerous conditions under which teachers and parents work in Kilcummin national school, Killarney, County Kerry; the plans he has to rectify the situation; the time scale involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has agreed to grant aid the erection of an extension at Kilcummin national school, County Kerry, to comprise five classrooms. The conversion of the existing school to a general purposes room is also proposed. The preparation of contract documents is in hands and it is expected that they will be completed in about two to three months time. The question of invitation of tenders will then arise for consideration and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities.

My Department has not received any specific complaint from the school authorities that the school is in dangerous condition but in view of what the Deputy states I propose to have the matter examined by my Department's professional advisers.
