Vol. 364 No. 7

Written Answers. - Timber Exports.

63.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of grave concern regarding the alleged exportation of timber through Cahirciveen pier in County Kerry; if the promoters have got planning permission to use this pier; if he is aware that native industries are concerned about this exportation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that some quantities of pulpwood are being exported to France by a private company through Cahirciveen pier. The company concerned is entitled to export such material to member states of the EC and no licence is required for such exports. I am informed that the company has supply contracts with native pulpwood industries but that there is no demand from Irish firms for the material which is being exported at present and which comes from forests in Counties Cork and Kerry. The quantity involved is small.
