Vol. 364 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork Airport Improvement Works.

69.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will make a statement on the improvements and other capital works which will be undertaken at Cork airport in 1986; if he will give details of the works involved and when they are expected to be completed; if the new runway extension and modernisation of the lighting system will be included; if he is aware of the number of over-flights and diversions that are a problem for Cork airport because of fog and high wind; and the amount of expenditure in each case.

The information requested is set out hereunder:

Works/Items of Equipment

Actual/expected completion date

Estimated total expenditure

1. Floodlighting/roadworks

February 1986

£162,000

2. Security fencing

April 1986

£62,000

3. Instrument landing system

May 1986

£500,000

4. Fire station extension/new fire vehicle

August 1986

£350,000

5. Control Tower fire proofing

November 1986

£130,000

I am aware that aircraft diversions caused by weather conditions have been a problem for Cork airport. I am examining a proposal for an extension to the main runway and the provision of improved navigational aids in the light of the investment criteria governing capital expenditure in the public sector and the general financial situation.
