Vol. 364 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dublin Special School.

167.

asked the Minister for Education if a school (details supplied) in Dublin 1 which has been put under the special schools section will now qualify for: (a) additional financial assistance and (b) one extra teacher as one teacher must now teach both fourth and fifth classes.

The school in question was selected to participate in a programme of special educational measures initiated in 1984 for schools in disadvantaged areas. Through this scheme, for which a special fund was provided, the school received substantial grants in 1984 and 1985.

Further assistance under the scheme is being made available in 1986 and the distribution of funding in this regard is under consideration at present.

As a school serving a disadvantaged area a staff of principal plus four assistants plus a remedial teacher has been allowed exceptionally in the school year 1985-86. This is considerably in excess of normal staffing and it would not be open to me to provide further teaching assistance.
