Vol. 364 No. 10

Written Answers. - Modernisation of Pigmeat Processing.

176.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is satisfied with the progress being made in the processing of bacon and pork in our plants to ensure our products would be acceptable in the US market.

There is an urgent need for rationalisation and modernisation of pigmeat processing in Ireland and I am disappointed with the present situation where we do not have any plants approved for exporting pigmeat to the United States. Generous grant aid — both national and EC — is available to suitable applicants to enable the rationalisation and improvement of plants so that they can attain the standards laid down by the United States Department of Agriculture. I am hopeful that this attractive investment aid will encourage the necessary improvement in our facilities so that a market for Irish pigmeat can be developed in the United States.
