asked the Minister for Labour the number of people directly employed in the tourist industry in 1985; and the percentage of this employment which is regarded as full time employment.
Written Answers. - Tourism Industry Employment.
My Department do not have comprehensive information on employment in the tourism industry. I would, however, refer the Deputy to the Government White Paper on Tourism Policy, published in 1985, which estimates that in 1984 upwards of 40,000 jobs arose directly or indirectly from out-of-state tourism including carrier activity.
CERT Limited have recently published their manpower survey of the hotel and catering industry for 1984. The survey indicated an employment level of over 62,000 in these industries. A tabular extract from the survey is attached distinguishing between permanent, seasonal and casual employees.
