Vol. 365 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Expenditure.

149.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of public expenditure expressed as a percentage of the gross domestic product for the years 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Public expenditure is defined as the total of gross current expenditure by the Exchequer and by local authorities from their own resources, and capital expenditure by the Exchequer and all State agencies. On this basis, public expenditure expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product amounted to 65.5 per cent in 1983, 64.4 per cent in 1984 and 63.4 per cent in 1985.

The 1983 figure excludes current expenditure on the Posts and Telegraphs Vote.
