Vol. 365 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Harbour Development.

23.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the estimated figure provided for harbour development in 1986.

39.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the estimated amount provided for harbour development in County Mayo for 1986, giving the harbours where it is proposed to have expenditure carried out with the appropriate sum for development in each case.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 39 together. The amount allocated to my Department for harbour development in 1986 is £1.8 million.

The amount allocated for harbour development in County Mayo from the Fisheries Vote for 1986 is £143,430 apportioned as follows: Killala, £26,250; Purteen, £93,750; Ballyglass, £11,250; Blacksod, £3,000 and Killerduff, £9,180.

I congratulate the Minister of State on his post. Is he satisfied that £1.8 million will be of any consequence in the improvement of harbours this year? Can he give any indication of where these amounts will be allocated in Connacht, for example?

No matter how much money one would allocate to harbour development one would not cater for the number of people who want harbours extended or repaired. In my short time in the Department there has been far more work sought than would gobble up the £1.8 million. I am talking about the western seaboard. I do not have the information the Deputy has requested with regard to the western seaboard, but there is a total of £143,430 available for harbour development in County Mayo.

Does that £143,000 odd include Roonah pier?

Can the Minister indicate the harbours on which the money is likely to be spent?

Killala £26,250, Purteen £93,750, Ballyglass £11,250, Blacksod £3,000 and Killerduff £9,180.

Perhaps the Minister would indicate the amount available to his own County Galway in this year for harbour development?

I do not have that figure but I can guarantee that I am having a serious look at harbour development in the Galway area.

How much of the £1.8 million will pay for work done last year? Are any new projects covered under the allocation? Is it the Minister's intention to undertake any new projects with the £1.8 million?

I do not have that information.

Of course the Minister has it.

Question No. 24 from Deputy Molloy.

Could the Minister give us an indication of any new projects?

I do not have that information at this time.

The Minister had information about Killala. He does not want to give the information.
