Vol. 365 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

313.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of people employed under the social employment scheme by Cork County Council last year; the number of people offered employment under the social employment scheme who did not accept; and the reasons these people gave for nonacceptance.

In 1985, Cork County Council employed 201 persons under the social employment scheme. Precise statistics relating to the number of persons offered employment under the scheme with Cork County Council are not available. It has, however, been estimated that 50 persons refused offers of employment with the county council in 1985. Various reasons were given for refusing offers of employment by the county council. The most common were the unsuitability of the type of work offered and the rate of remuneration for work on the scheme (that is, £70 for two and a half days' work per week) compared to the levels of unemployment assistance being received by potential participants.
