Vol. 365 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Galway VEC Schools.

18.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons VEC schools in County Galway are having their plans for building and extensions reviewed; the reasons that he has not granted a meeting on this matter to a deputation from the County Galway VEC; the date on which this deputation will be met; and if he will make a statement on these matters.

In accordance with the terms of paragraph 5.12 of the Programme for Action in Education. 1984-1987, which states, inter alia, that

Each building project in course of planning, and all future proposed projects, will be examined in the context of Post-Primary School resources generally in the catchment area to determine the practicability of integration or, alternatively, co-ordination of facilities,

My Department has had under examination seven County Galway VEC building projects. Examination has been completed in respect of four of these and architectural planning has been resumed. The remaining three cases are still under examination. In this context officials of my Department met a deputation from County Galway VEC in November last. I fully appreciate the problems of the VEC and I have asked that the examination be completed without delay. Pending completion of this examination no useful purpose would be served by my meeting a deputation.
