Vol. 365 No. 8

Written Answers. - Violent Male Juveniles.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any plans to provide extra accommodation for violent male juveniles in the 12-16 year age group; if Trinity House School, with a maximum of 27 inmates, is sufficient in view of the increase in crime in this category; the plans, if any, his Department has to provide preventative measures in this regard; if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has no plans to provide additional accommodation for the category of juvenile offender referred to by the Deputy. The existing accommodation is considered adequate to meet the needs of such children referred by the courts.

As regards preventative measures, four youth encounter projects — two in Dublin, one in Cork and one in Limerick — provide schooling and day care for some 100 young people who are at risk of getting into trouble with the law. These centres provide positive liaison with the families of children who attend them.
