asked the Minister for Education the total amount of money made available by him for in-service teacher courses in the years 1983, 1984 and 1985; the number and types of courses held; the number of teachers attending these courses in each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a tabular statement which sets out the financial provision for in-service education in the years in question.

It is not possible to list all the courses or to give details of the substantial number of teachers who attend evening, weekend, or one day courses and other activities provided by teachers' centres and other bodies supported directly and indirectly by the Department. Copies of the Department's annual circular letters in regard to in-service education in these years are being sent to the Deputy as an indication of the extent of the courses provided.

Courses Provided

(1) Courses were provided on all aspects of the primary school curriculum and for subjects on the post-primary school curriculum in addition to courses on the use of computers and audio visual aids, guidance-counselling, remedial education, dealing with children with special needs and the promotion of equality in education.

(2) It is not possible to list all the courses-activities which were funded directly-indirectly by the Department.

(3) In 1985 all primary schools principals attended day seminars organised by the inspectorate.
