Vol. 365 No. 10

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

86.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that health boards are requesting applicants for medical cards and for renewal of medical cards in cases where the applicants have both part time employment and unemployment assistance at a reduced rate, to submit income tax assessment notices from the inspector of taxes; if he is aware that it is impossible for such applicants to prepare the necessary documentation to enable the inspector of taxes to deal with their application and that the applicants for medical cards cannot afford to pay an accountant; if he will request the health boards to waive this procedure, particularly in respect of persons who are in receipt of unemployment assistance at an amount in excess of 75 per cent of the appropriate rate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware. Normally health boards require a certificate of earnings from persons in employment, either full time or part, and a certificate from the local employment exchange in respect of persons in receipt of unemployment assistance. If the Deputy is aware of requirements on the lines suggested in the question perhaps he might forward details to me and I will follow it up with the appropriate health board.
