Vol. 365 No. 12

Written Answers. - Insurance Cover.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps he will take with the insurance companies to reconsider their decision so as to ensure that Muintir na Tire events will take place throughout the country during 1986 as they have been informed that there is no insurance company in Ireland that will insure them; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I have had inquiries made about this matter and I understand that up to relatively recently all Muintir na Tíre community councils were insured under a global policy by a particular insurer. The risk was surveyed prior to renewal by this insurer and the renewal terms offered were not acceptable to Muintir na Tíre for several reasons. Alternative arrangements with another insurer have now been made by the broker acting for Muintir na Tíre whereby each council is quoted separately. I understand that at the moment questionnaires have been issued to each council and negotiations are taking place on premium rate, terms etc.

If any individual council is experiencing difficulties they should consult with the insurance section of my Department which will make every effort to assist them. I must stress, however, that at the end of the day I cannot force any insurer to provide cover nor can I insist on a particular premium level.
