Vol. 365 No. 14

Written Answers. - Tree Preservation Order.

24.

(Dublin North-West) asked the Minister for the Environment if he will recommend that a preservation order should be made in respect of the Santry Demesne and Woods, Dublin 11, in order to protect the wildlife and valuable trees that are being destroyed there at present.

Planning authorities have power under section 45 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, to make tree preservation orders to secure the preservation of trees and woodlands in their area. I have no power to direct a planning authority to make an order. I understand that Dublin County Council has initiated a survey of the trees in Santry Demesne as a preliminary to deciding whether a tree preservation order should be made.
