Vol. 366 No. 1

Written Answers. - Aids to Farming.

69.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the very difficult financial position in which farmers in the north County Dublin area find themselves as a result of the weather conditions in 1985 and the very severe competition from imports; and the action he proposes to take to alleviate the position of these farmers.

The adverse weather conditions last summer and autumn caused severe farming difficulties all over the country. In order to alleviate the problems, I introduced a number of measures, including the nitrogen and silage subsidy schemes, the feed voucher scheme and the working capital scheme for tillage farmers, at a total cost of approximately £23 million. Farmers in north County Dublin have, of course, been eligible to participate in these schemes and it should also be noted that in the case of the working capital scheme for tillage farmers special provision was made for producers of horticultural products.
