Vol. 366 No. 2

Written Answers. - Salmon Farming.

30.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he will outline Government policy in relation to the development of salmon farming on the west coast and in particular in relation to the Norwegian proposal to anchor a large tanker in Galway Bay; and if he will outline his views in this matter.

Government policy in relation to the development of fish-farming generally will be set out in the forthcoming White Paper on Fisheries. In the meantime a special unit has been established in my Department to deal specifically with all aspects of aquaculture and a range of incentives is available from the State bodies concerned. The proposal to use a large tanker for salmon-farming in Galway Bay, which is a novel one, raises a number of major issues which are still under examination. I hope to make a decision in the matter shortly.
