Vol. 367 No. 2

Written Answers. - Permissible Weights for Goods Vehicles.

56.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will make a statement on recent disturbing comments by the President of the Irish Road Hauliers' Association that State-owned and private companies are forcing hauliers to carry up to treble the legal limit in their trucks; if he considers this warrants immediate action; and if he will make a statement on the steps, if any, he proposes to take.

I am aware of allegations of the type referred to by the Deputy. The regulations governing the permissible maximum laden weights of goods vehicles were made by the Minister for the Environment under the Road Traffic Act, 1961. Enforcement of the regulations is primarily a matter for the Garda Síochána.

If the Irish Road Haulage Association has details of State-owned and private companies involved in the practice of causing hauliers to overload trucks it should forward them to the Garda authorities for investigation.
