Vol. 367 No. 6

Written Answers. - Petrol Prices.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the proposals which have emerged from his discussion with petrol retailers about excessive charging; and in particular if he will now (a) provide a guide price for a standard quality petrol for the benefit of the public and (b) order price display in a prominent position on forecourts.

Limerick East): My purpose in meeting with representatives of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry and the Irish Petrol Retailers Association recently was to seek their co-operation and assistance in persuading petrol retailers not to exceed the retail prices being recommended by the oil companies. Both bodies undertook to communicate further with their members on the matter. Based on a survey carried out last month, the present indications are that most petrol retailers, in fact, are now observing the company-recommended prices.

In so far as publication of a guide price and the ordering of price displays are concerned, I would refer the Deputy to replies to related questions by him on 6 May 1986 (Official Report, volume 365, col. 2707-2709). I will be keeping these matters under review in the light of the continuing response of the trade to the points which I have made to them.
