asked the Minister for Justice the present position regarding a prisoner (details supplied) who is on hunger strike; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Hunger Strike by Prisoner.
202.
The prisoner is serving a sentence of six months' imprisonment, arising from convictions for breaches of the Fisheries Acts.
On 15 June 1986 he began refusing food and continues to do so. He is being seen daily by the medical officer at Fort Mitchel.
He has indicated that he is taking this action in an effort to secure changes in the fisheries regulations, principally in so far as those regulations do not permit the use of monofilament nets. He has said that he has no complaint with the actions of the prison authorities.
