Vol. 368 No. 5

Written Answers. - Apprenticeship Allowances.

211.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9 who was taken on as a dental technician by his father and who had been registered with Manpower, does not get the same allowance as other similar apprentices would in circumstances where they were taken on in that profession.

The person to whom the Deputy refers is unemployed at present and his parents have advised officials of my Department that they are seeking either employment for him or financial aid to enable his father employ him.

Neither the employment incentive scheme nor the work experience programme is applicable in respect of parents offering to employ or give work experience to their own children.

It might be possible for the parent to sponsor his son for an apprenticeship course in dental craftsmanship but I understand that this is not what the parent has in mind.

The National Manpower Service is making every effort to find employment for this person and I have requested that the appropriate placement officer in the NMS contact him to discuss and review his employment prospects.
