Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - EC Agricultural Policy.

232.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will comment on the present EC policy which seems to be geared against increases in development and which is militating against the country.

The Community has considerable overproduction in a number of sectors and various policy changes have been made over the last decade to take account of that factor. We are heavily dependent on the CAP for the viability of farming in Ireland and it is important to us that the policy is adapted so that it remains viable in current circumstances. It is, of course, also important that farmers and processors become much more market-orientated and less dependent on support mechanisms.

I would also refer the Deputy to the Debate in this House on 29 April on this year's EC farm price package.
