Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Limerick New Community College.

264.

asked the Minister for Education the progress which has been made in relation to the claim by Limerick city VEC for the provision of another second level community college on the eastern side of Limerick city; if he is aware that young boys of 12 years of age have no possibility of entering the secondary schools this year in Limerick city due to the shortage of available places; and if he will indicate his proposals to meet this crisis.

My Department has recently completed its examination of an application from the City of Limerick VEC for the provision of a new post primary school. In the light of this examination, which is based on the most up-to-date statistics available and which has had regard to the current provision of second level accommodation in the city. I am satisfied that a new second level school is not needed in Limerick city. I am also satisfied that, taking cognisance of building extensions already sanctioned, there will be sufficient accomodation available to cater for the long term needs of the city.

I am not aware that any boys leaving primary school in Limerick city will be unable to proceed to post primary education in the coming year because of a lack of accommodation. It must be accepted, however, that in urban areas, it is not always possible to place a pupil in the school of his/her choice.
