Vol. 368 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School Closure.

22.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the proposal to close down St. Laurence O'Toole's CBS, Seville Place, Dublin 1, as and from Friday, 29 August 1986, in view of the extraordinary problems being suffered by the school in this disadvantaged area; if he will personally intervene to ensure that this does not happen; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have no proposals to close this school nor has it been informed officially by the school authorities of their intention to do so.

Representations from the school authorities with regard to financial assistance are being examined at present, and I hope to be in a position to indicate shortly to these authorities the outcome of this examination.

I appeal to the Minister to have those discussions concluded quickly because there is a feeling of insecurity in regard to the future of the school which is providing an extraordinary service in an area we are all supposed to be committed to. In those discussions will it be possible to guarantee the school long term security?

I am anxious that the discussions should terminate quickly and satisfactorily as far as the future of the school is concerned. I will convey to my Department the need to bring the discussions to a satisfactory conclusion and to try to reach a solution which will guarantee the long term future of the school.
