Vol. 368 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Training Courses.

16.

asked the Minister for Labour if it is proposed to have AnCO training courses in forestry, in view of the need for instruction of persons getting involved in private afforestation.

AnCO run courses in timber harvesting and the next such course is due to start in Ballinrobe in September next.

AnCO are also considering whether it would be appropriate for them to become involved in the training of people intending to become involved in other aspects of private afforestation.

Does the Minister agree that, because of the scarcity of forestry stock, there is a great opportunity for development in this area which would be a positive approach towards developing the timber industry?

Yes, tree felling is listed as an appropriate activity under the construction designation of AnCO and the next course will be run in Ballinrobe. These courses are run in conjunction with the Department of Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry who supply instructors.

I do not think it is a good idea to have courses on tree felling at present because there is a scarcity of trees. Recently, people in a group water scheme wished to have a shelter belt of a few hundred trees and they had to go outside the country for them. As trees are so scarce I ask the Minister, in conjunction with AnCO, to examine the possibility of running courses for people who are interested in private afforestation but who are unable to make any progress at present.

Certainly I will look at that suggestion.
