Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, Dublin, Closure.

286.

asked the Minister for Health the reason for the closure of Sir Patrick Dun's hospital in 1986; and if it constituted a fire hazard.

The closure of Sir Patrick Dun's hospital was part of the rationalisation plan for general hospital services in Dublin. This plan which has been endorsed by successive Ministers for Health will result in the creation of a rational, cost efficient and integrated hospital system. The occupancy rate in Sir Patrick Dun's was declining for the past number of years and having regard to the fact that the building was not suitable for the provision of modern acute services the Government decided to close the hospital in 1986. The major specialist services formerly provided at Sir Patrick Dun's hospital have been incorporated into other south-city hospitals, mainly St. James's hospital. This will result in an enhanced service for the total population of south Dublin. The hospital was also, in fact a fire hazard.
