Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Renal Dialysis Units.

289.

asked the Minister for Health the hospitals that have a renal dialysis unit available.

Renal dialysis units are associated with each of the four consultants staffed nephrology units at Jervis Street hospital, The Meath hospital, Cork Regional hospital and Galway Regional hospital. In addition there is a dialysis unit at St. Mary's hospital, Phoenix Park, Dublin, which is associated with the service in Jervis Street.

There are also renal dialysis facilities in Letterkenny General hospital, Sligo Regional hospital, Limerick Regional hospital and Ardkeen Regional hospital, Waterford. Each of these is closely linked with the four main centres.

290.

asked the Minister for Health the size of the catchment area and the average number of patients necessary for the establishment of a renal dialysis unit.

No definitive catchment area or average number of patients has been stipulated for the establishment of renal dialysis units. However, for a unit to be viable it is considered that it should have a sufficient catchment population to provide an average workload of about 12 patients.
