Under the Horse Industry Act, 1970, Bord na gCapall is responsible for the development of the non-thoroughbred horse industry. The Commission of Inquiry into the thoroughbred horse breeding industry recommended that the bord and the National Stud should explore the feasibility of standing suitable stallions at locations throughout the country in order to effect greater breeding improvement in the non-thoroughbred sector. This recommendation is currently being examined.
