Vol. 369 No. 2

Written Answers. - British Army Lookout Post.

22.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that the British Army have established a look out post on the Louth-Armagh Border and in the process displaced a number of small landholders in the area in recent times in addition to intimidating people on both sides of the Border; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that a number of observation posts have been constructed near the Louth-Armagh border. Discussion of this matter has been continuing with the British authorities. I understand that the landowners whose lands have been affected will be compensated. Claims have already been made for damage to property and I understand that some compensation payments have now been made. Farmers can also be compensated on an annual basis for loss of income resulting from the operation of these posts and they will be entitled to rental payments where land has been directly requisitioned.
