Vol. 369 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary Roads Review.

6.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he proposes to have a national review of the condition of secondary roads throughout the country, and, if so, when he expects to have the necessary result available.

The condition of the road network is subject to regular review by my Department in the context of the preparation of road plans and when considering annual road grant allocations. This review is based on scientific evaluations by An Foras Forbartha and on information provided by local authorities and my Department's inspectors. One of the results of the most recent review is that the block grant to local authorities in 1986 is 21 per cent higher than the 1985 provision. I also decided earlier this year to allocate £5 million for country road strengthening.

My Department are at present examining the condition of the road network as part of the preparatory work for the next road plan, which I would hope to publish in the first half of 1987.
