asked the Minister for Justice the amount paid in 1985 to the legal profession under the civil legal aid scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Legal services under the civil legal aid scheme, which is administered by the Legal Aid Board, are provided by salaried solicitors employed by the board. The cost of solicitors' salaries in 1985 was £402,386. The cost of fees paid to barristers for services provided under the scheme in 1985 was £65,141.
