Vol. 369 No. 8

Written Answers. - Unemployment Forecasts.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance what his Department forecasts as the unemployment situation up to the year 2000.

Recent trends and the short-term outlook suggest that unemployment has begun to stabilise. As regards the longer-term outlook, I am confident that, provided the right policies are pursued, employment can grow at a rate sufficient to bring about a reduction in unemployment. The Deputy will appreciate that the preparation of specific forecasts up to the year 2000 would require major studies, and that, given the many assumptions that would have to be made, the resultant forecasts would be open to a very wide degree of variation.
