Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Adult Literacy.

172.

asked the Minister for Education if he will provide a complete breakdown of funds allocated to literacy by the Dublin Adult Education Board for the year 1985-86; if he will ensure that the proposals for funding submitted by the Adult Education Board for the year 1987 will be met; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Adult Education Board of the City of Dublin VEC was allocated budgets of £18,000 and £41,500, for the establishment of courses in adult literacy and community education, in the financial years 1985 and 1986, respectively. These amounts were allocated as follows by the board: In 1985, £9,575 was allocated to literacy provision and £8,425 to community education and in 1986 £27,026 was allocated to literacy provision and £14,474 to community education.

I have received from the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee an estimate of the provision sought by its Adult Education Board in respect of Adult Literacy and Community Education for 1986-87. Provision for these services would fall to be made in the normal way in my Department's estimates for the 1987 financial year. It would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the matter until the provision to be made for any Department in the Estimates for the Public Services for 1987 has been decided.
