Vol. 370 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Fishing Industry.

93.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the steps he has taken to ensure that our fishing industry will be fully protected within the European Community with particular reference to non-quota species and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have at every available opportunity pressed at EC level for the best possible deal for Irish fishermen and will continue to do so in future. With regard to non-quota species, my aim will be to make every effort to ensure, if and when these species become subject to quota, the best possible allocation for Irish fishermen. In the interim, it would be, of course, most helpful if Irish fishermen were to increase their catches of those species in order to build up a good catching performance record.
