Vol. 370 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sale of Pesticides.

152.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the measures, if any, which are being taken to restrict the sale of dangerous weed-killers such as Paraquat, etc.; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Regulations, under Community legislation, provide that pesticides, including herbicides such as Paraquat, may be sold only if I am satisfied that they do not constitute a danger to health or safety when used in accordance with instructions. The regulations lay down conditions regarding classification, packaging and labelling of pesticides placed on the market. The risks involved in their use must be indicated and suitable advice on safety must be given on the labels and packages.

My Department in reviewing the range of pesticides currently on the market is giving priority to the more dangerous products.

Paraquat is also defined as a poison under the Poisons Act, 1961, (Paraquat) Regulations, 1975.
