Vol. 370 No. 9

Written Answers. - Corporation Profits Tax.

137.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of firms in respect of whom agreement for liability for corporation profits tax still remains to be agreed with the Revenue Commissioners in respect of 1978 or earlier and 1979 to 1985 inclusive.

138.

asked the Minister for Finance an estimate of the amount outstanding in respect of corporation profits tax for 1978 or earlier, and 1979 to 1986 inclusive.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 137 and 138 together. The Corporation Tax Act 1976, provided broadly that, where a company ceased to be within the charge to income tax and commenced to be within the charge to corporation tax, the company would at that time, not being a date later than 5 April 1976 also cease to be within the charge of corporation profits tax. The latter tax continued to be charged and collected in respect of profits arising on or before that date to the extent that those profits did not come within the charge to corporation tax.

The information available in response to Question No. 138 relates to the corporation profits tax outstanding for all years which amounted to £6 million as at 31 May 1985. An analysis of the balance and an estimate of the amount likely to be collected as at that date are contained in Schedule 7 (page xviii) of the report (PI 3179) of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Appropriation Acounts for 1984 a copy of which is in the Library.

As regards Question No. 137 statistics are not compiled in such manner as to enable the information sought by the Deputy to be given.
