Vol. 371 No. 8

Written Answers. - Celbridge (Kildare) Garda Strength.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will increase the Garda strength in the Celbridge area, County Kildare in the light of the alarming increase in housebreaking and other crimes there.

The allocation of manpower to individual stations is a matter for the Garda authorities, who review the strength assigned to the various stations in the light of their assessment of needs and having regard to overall resources.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the current strength at Celbridge is one sergeant and five gardaí. In addition, two detective gardaí from Naas are assigned to the investigation of crime in the Celbridge area and the area also receives attention from mobile Garda patrols operating out of Naas and Rathcoole stations.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that while there has been an increase in crime in Celbridge in the first quarter of 1987, as compared with the corresponding period in 1986, the detection rate has been very good and a number of persons have been charged with housebreaking and other crimes in the Celbridge area in recent weeks.

The Garda strength assigned to this area will continue to be kept under review.
