asked the Minister for Education the number of doctors qualifying in Irish medical schools each year for the last five years, on a school by school basis; the number of such doctors who are emigrating from this country on qualification; her views on whether the country is producing an adequate supply of doctors; and the cost, on a per capita basis, of educating doctors.

The latest information available to me is included in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. I do not have available to me information on the number of doctors who emigrate on qualification but it is likely to be very small given the necessity for newly qualified doctors to serve one year of internship here before being eligible for full registration. I am satisfied that we are producing an adequate supply of doctors to meet the needs of the country.
I do not have the per-capita cost of educating doctors but I intend to have a study of unit costs in third-level education carried out which should provide this type of information.
