Vol. 372 No. 6

Written Answers. - Communication with Libyan Leader.

23.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether there has been any communication with the Libyan leader, Colonel Gadaffi since February 1987; the date and content of any such communications; and whether such communication had reference to newspaper reports of 16 April 1987 in which Mr. Sadi Gadaffi is quoted as stating that Libya will open centres for the IRA.

During the period in question there has been no communication by the Taoiseach or myself with Colonel Gadaffi regarding the newspaper reports to which the Deputy refers or, indeed, on any other matter. However, the Deputy will be aware that the Irish authorities have repeatedly made it clear to the Libyan authorities that any support for the IRA is unacceptable.

As the Deputy will also be aware, the Twelve member states of the European Community have a common attitude on the question of State support for terrorism and have, separately from our national approaches, made clear to the Libyan authorities the need for a clear and outright renunciation of support for terrorism from States with which they conduct normal relations.
