Vol. 372 No. 6

Written Answers. - Repatriation of Prisoners.

28.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to the British authorities regarding the request of Irish prisoners in English jails for repatriation to jails in the Six Counties and the Republic; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have signed the European Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons which provides for the possibility of the transfer of prisoners among member states of the Council of Europe including this country and Britain. The preparation of legislation for ratification is a matter for the Minister for Justice.

With regard to the transfer of prisoners from Britain to Northern Ireland, I am prepared to consider raising requests for transfer with the British authorities in individual cases.
