Vol. 372 No. 6

Written Answers. - Residential Care.

107.

asked the Minister for Health the cost of detaining a person for a full year in St. Ann's institution, Kilmacud, County Dublin.

108.

asked the Minister for Health (a) the number of girls resident in St. Ann's Kilmacud special school, County Dublin; (b) the age group for admission to this institution; (c) the number of places provided in this institution; and (d) the breakdown of reasons for commital to this institution of present residents.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 108 together.

St. Ann's, Kilmacud was for many years a reformatory school for young female offenders. On 23 July 1984, St. Ann's ceased to be certified as a reformatory at the request of the religious community who run the home. St. Ann's now caters for girls between the ages of about 12 to 16 years who are in the care of health boards because they are "at risk" and in need of residential care.

The home caters for a maximum of 11 girls and there are eight girls in residence at present. The home is financed by way of an annual budget allocation from the Eastern Health Board. In 1986, the cost of maintaining a girl in the home for a full year was £8,684.
