asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of boys resident in (1) St. Michael's Remand and Assessment Centre, Finglas, (2) St. Lawrence's, Finglas, (3) St. Joseph's, Clonmel and (4) Trinity House; (b) the age group for admission to each institution; (c) the number of places provided in each institution; and (d) the breakdown of reasons for commital to each institution of present residents.

Details of the number of boys in residence and of the number of places available in the special schools mentioned by the Deputy are as follows:—

St. Michael's assessment centre and St. Lawrence's special school together form Finglas children's centre and this centre caters for boys in the ten to 15 years age group. In St. Joseph's special school boys are admitted between the ages of ten and 14 years while Trinity House school provides for boys in the 12 to 16 years age group.

Details of the reasons for committal of the boys at present in residence in these schools are as follows:

St. Michael's Assessment Centre

1 charged with causing malicious damage.

1 charged with being carried in a stolen car.

1 charged with throwing missiles.

1 charged with breaking and entering

1 charged with being out of parental control.

1 charged with a breach of the Probation Act.

4 referred by the health boards.

St. Lawrence's Special School

11 committed for larceny.

5 committed for non-school attendance.

5 committed for burglary.

3 committed for unlawfully taking a mechanically-propelled vehicle.

2 committed for being out of parental control.

1 committed for assault.

1 committed for being conveyed in a stolen car.

1 committed for trespassing with intent to steal.

1 committed under a fit persons order.

1 committed for breaking and entering.

1 committed for indecent assault.

1 committed for holding a collection without a collection permit.
