Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Deployment of Gardaí in Border Areas.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, he has to augment Garda strength in Dundalk, County Louth and combat the renewed activities of the IRA along the Border; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The arrangements for the policing of individual areas and the allocation of manpower and other resources to individual stations are matters for the Garda authorities, having regard to their assessment of needs, overall resources and other demands on Garda services.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the strength and deployment of gardaí in Border areas, including Dundalk, is kept under constant review and replacements and additional staff are provided where necessary. A number of additional gardaí are being assigned to the division of Louth-Meath later this week and the Garda authorities are satisfied that the strength at Dundalk is sufficient to meet any problems which arise there from the activities of illegal organisations.
