asked the Minister for Justice if in view of the need for data protection legislation to safeguard the individual against the improper use of personal records by Government and State agencies: the plans, if any, he has in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government has approved the drafting of legislation to give effect to the Council of Europe Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data, which was signed on behalf of Ireland in December 1986. It will apply to both public and private sectors.
