Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Salmon Stock.

84.

asked the Minister for the Marine in view of the valuable asset which the salmon stocks provide for the tourist industry, the measures being taken to protect the stocks from monofilament nets which cause widespread destruction to stocks and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A review group is at present examining all existing salmon conservation measures including the ban on monofilment netting for salmon fishing. This group was set up by my predecessor and I understand that it hopes to issue an interim report shortly.

Pending the receipt of the group's report I do not propose to make any changes in the rules governing the use of monofilament nets in salmon fishing. I have however recently urged all the regional fisheries boards to do their utmost to prevent illegal fishing in 1987.
