Vol. 372 No. 9

Written Answers. - Galway-Arran Ferry Service.

22.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if financial provision has been made this year for new shipping and wharf facilities for the Aran Islands; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the Deputy's question relates to the issue of a replacement vessel for the Naomh Éanna for the Galway-Aran ferry service.

The examination of a number of proposals in relation to this matter is at an advanced stage in my Department. Some of the proposals envisage a roll-on-roll-off type vessel and attendant infrastructural developments. No financial allocation can be provided in relation to this matter in advance of a decision by the Government.

I am informed by CIE that they have taken a number of measures to ensure adequate capacity during the summer. This was necessary because of the non-availability this year of the Galway Bay, a vessel which has been leased for a number of years to supplement the Naomh Éanna during the summer season.

The Naomh Éanna sailings are being increased from two to six per week with no service on Mondays and passenger only services on Sundays; this service will be supplemented as required by a bus service to Rossaveal to link with a ferry service by a private operator; the provision of a limited freight service to the two smaller islands by a private operator is being arranged. The Naomh Éanna will continue to serve the smaller islands twice weekly. I understand that the Aran Islands interests are reasonably satisfied with these arrangements.
