Vol. 372 No. 9

Written Answers. - Marriages of Convenience.

33.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to any marriages of convenience in this country to enable non-nationals to obtain Irish passports; if he is investigating the situation; the plans, if any, he has for amending the law in this regard for safeguards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No".

As far as I am aware there is no evidence which would suggest that marriages of convenience are being contracted in this country by non-nationals for the purpose of obtaining an Irish passport.

I am keeping the general situation in relation to post-nuptial citizenship under review and I consider that the question of amending legislation in this area could best be considered when inquiries into allegations of irregularities in the London Embassy are completed.
